International Green Peace was not born in a boardroom. It was born in conversations — quiet, urgent conversations between people who were watching something precious disappear and feeling, increasingly, that silence was no longer an option.
Over the past fourteen years, India has undergone profound transformations. Some have been extraordinary — in technology, in connectivity, in the voices that can now be heard. But alongside that growth, something else has been happening, more quietly.
The air in our cities has thickened. Rivers that nourished civilisations for millennia have been reduced to drains. Forests that were lungs, homes, and living libraries have been cleared for infrastructure. Wetlands that once filtered our water and fed our birds have been converted to parking lots. Communities that held ecological knowledge accumulated over generations have been displaced or silenced.
And in the midst of it all — a generation of young Indians has grown up increasingly disconnected from the living world that their grandparents took for granted. The tree in the courtyard. The river you could drink from. The monsoon that arrived on time.
We are the smartest animal on this planet. That intelligence carries a responsibility no other species can bear. We are accountable — to each other, and to every living being that cannot speak in our language.
IGP exists because a group of people who love India — its diversity, its ecological richness, its cultures, its potential — decided that caring for self and caring for others is not a contradiction. It is the same act.
IGP was founded by a small group of individuals from different backgrounds — Theatre, Psychology, ecology, education, and community work — who found themselves asking the same questions and arriving at the same conviction: that the tools for change already exist within people. They just need to be activated.
We keep our founding circle anonymous. Not out of indifference, but out of a principled commitment to our Round Table governance model — a movement where no individual name or personality becomes the story. The work is the story. The participants are the story. The planet and its people are the story.
Our roots are in Mumbai, and we are deeply Indian in our orientation — shaped by the richness of India's ecological and cultural diversity, its traditions of non-violent action, its history of grassroots movements, and its extraordinary capacity for community solidarity. We are open to partnerships with Indian organisations who share our values, and to connections with global movements working toward the same horizon.
We are not a charity. We are not a service provider. We are a movement guided by a simple but transformative motto: Prosperity and Harmony through Art and Nature — PHAN. Our goal is equally clear and equally profound: to create harmony with the inner self and harmony with the outer world. These two harmonies are not separate. They are the same movement, inward and outward at once.
We work through three complementary disciplines that address the ecological crisis at three levels simultaneously:
IGP is governed by three permanent constitutional Guardians — Jeevit Sewa (100% of funds to living beings), the Round Table (sociocratic consent decision-making with no hierarchical leader), and the Scientific Compass (all programme content verified against current science). These are not aspirational values. They are structural commitments written into the way we operate.
Our primary base is in Mumbai, Maharashtra. We have delivered programmes in 12+ cities across India, and we operate online for reach across the subcontinent. We are a young movement, but a determined one. The urgency is not manufactured. The crisis is real. The need for Earth Citizens has never been greater.
Every Earth Citizen who joins IGP makes the circle wider and the work stronger. This movement belongs to all of us who care.
